Driving a vehicle in hazardous conditions, such as heavy rain or thick fog, is a matter of always driving calm and with caution. There are many ways to prevent accidents during such conditions.

Even though driving in rain does not seem all that dangerous, the truth is that collisions actually increase during such poor weather conditions. Not only does rain create slippery surfaces, but it also decreases visibility to drivers. Driving with eyes on the road the whole time is a safe way to drive in the rain.

“It is stressful driving in the rain, and one thing I suggest for all drivers is to put your headlights on,” senior Lauren Arena.

A more terrifying condition to drive in is the fog. Driving in the fog is dangerous and difficult, and is best if avoided. However, drivers who must drive need to turn on low beam lights and drive slowly to avoid any surprises.

“The best thing to do is to try to avoid the freeway, stay in the slow lane, and give plenty of space between you and the other driver,” Sheriff Lance Delbridge said.

The types of drivers most likely to be more prone to accidents are student drivers. Junior and senior year is typically the time when students begin driving and it important to drive safely.

“My car’s alignment is awful, so driving in the rain makes it very slippery,” senior Travis McIntyre said.

“When it rains or is foggy, I usually turn on my lights, and I drive way slower,” senior Tessa Robinson said.

The most important factor to consider while driving is speed. Watching your speedometer is necessary since fog creates a visual illusion, making it seem like you are driving slow when you are actually speeding. Keeping eyes on the road and listening to traffic around you are some tips to consider.

“It is important to go slow and always look around and be aware of your surroundings,” Robinson said.

“Never rush; it’s always better to play it safe,” McIntyre said.

Safety starts before you drive, and your goal should be to see and be seen, especially in bad weather conditions.
