Stefani Hollas back with third solo album

Gwen Stefani’s new album, “This Is What the Truth Feels Like”, was released March 18. This album is Stefani evoking her feelings and emotions about her failed marriage and new beginning through songs.

She introduces a new sounding voice that is unlike any of her other records. She’s more playful, emotional, and truly inspirational.

The first track on Stefani’s record is “Misery”. In this song it sounds as if reggae instruments are being used, which creates a more laidback atmosphere. It is definitely filled with more emotion and insight to her life than her earlier hits, such as “Rich Girl”.

“You’re My Favorite” is the second cut on the album. It explores a playful, bubbly, and more modern side of Stefani. This is the start to her music adapting to modern times.

“Where Would I Be?” could quite possibly be her next number one song. This has lots of meaning behind it, but also an upbeat tempo making it club worthy.

A song that has already become popular is “Make Me Like You”. I believe it’s her ballad to her new boyfriend, Blake Shelton. She’s scared of the feelings she gets by being with him since her last marriage failed.

The next track just exemplifies my theory. “Truth” is about Stefani finally finding real love with someone (clearly Shelton). In her lyrics to him, “thank you for saving me”, “so this is what the truth feels like”.

“Used to Love You” was first released as a single in 2015, but is now put on her most recent record. This song gives acumen to how she felt about her most recent relationship. She doesn’t want to remember it and would rather just move on.

The next song, “Send Me a Picture”, contrasts all the rest as it is not about her life or emotions throughout her tough period, rather it is very flirtatious and full of desire. In my opinion this song was my least favorite, but did relate more to the old Stefani.

“Red Flag”, no offense Stefani, should be a complete red flag. She replaces her sweet voice for rap. I think it’s a great way to show she is expanding her vocal styles, but she did not accomplish the rap thing at all.

To simply add another song with her new “style”, Stefani’s ninth track is “Asking 4 It” featuring Fetty Wap. The cooperation with Wap illustrates even further the transition of Stefani singing more mainstream from her quirky, unique self.

Next, “Naughty” takes it back to 2004 relating to her famous songs “Sweet Escape” and “Hollaback Girl”, switching between the styles of both.

“Me Without You” shows everyone, and especially her former husband, that she is much better and happier without him.

“Rare” concludes the standard album and could also be another famous Stefani single. This might possibly be one more heard at a rave.

On the extended and Target exclusive versions there are four more tracks: “Rocket Ship”, “Getting Warmer”, “Obsessed”, and “Splash”. The international, or Japanese, version further contains “Loveable” and “War Paint”.

Overall, it is impressive to see a new side to Stefani and her exploration of different phraseology. This album is a great buy thanks to Stefani’s expression of her feelings, herself, and her current view of life in a modern style everyone can relate to.
