Boys’ golf has a season of improvement

Tracy’s boys’ golf season has only one match left, but it has been a season of improvement for several players. The team is 2 in 6 in league, and 7 in 7 overall.

“This season has been very up and down,” coach Derrick Solano said. ”We probably should have beat Lincoln, but we didn’t because we lost by four strokes.”

“We have a lot of young players, so it’s been a little more difficult,” senior captain Gavin Bean said. “Last year we had a lot more experienced players, but we’ve still been doing pretty well.”

With a lot of young players this season came a lot of learning and improvement.

“We have so many kids that have gotten better,” Solano said.

“I’ve been playing golf for five years,” sophomore Wyatt Staas said. “I definitely got better this season and improved my technique.”

Staas plans to continue playing golf for the rest of his high school career.

“As captain, I have learned so much throughout this season,” Bean said. “I improved my leadership skills because I had to keep everyone in check during practice.”

“I think so many kids have improved because they learned how to control their rounds,” Solano said. “They know not to get upset when they hit a bad driver and to remain focused.”

Although the team lost to Lincoln on April 20, coach Solano still has goals they will hopefully achieve.

“We’re looking forward to moving two or three kids on to divisionals and seeing what they can do there,” Solano said.

Overall, this season was a lot of fun for all of the players, and many of them plan to play again next year.

“I always have a lot of fun out there with my friends,” Staas said.

The team’s final match is against West High on April 28, at 3 p.m, at the Tracy Golf and Country Club.
