Choir teacher Jennifer Grover’s singers put on two concerts during the school year: one in winter and one in spring. The big day for the winter concert is Wednesday, Dec. 10. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. at the Grand Theatre. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or online at AtTheGrand.org.

I put on these concerts showcasing my choir classes to show the parents of the students their growth and for them to have an insight of what we do in class,

— Jennifer Grover

She has been preparing her students for their upcoming winter concert since the first day of school. They have been gradually working on each song that Grover selected.

At first, Grover was looking into Disney’s “Frozen” songs and selected a couple songs from the soundtrack; however, she didn’t want “Frozen” to be the all around theme.

“There’s not really a theme to this concert. I wanted the songs to revolve around the idea of winter being icy and cold, so I chose the songs according to that,” Grover said.

The choir classes faced some difficulty with their songs . The Advanced Choir class, also known as “Madrigals”, were given a German piece from “The Brahms Requiem”. Women’s Chorus had problems with the song “Dashing Through the Snow” with keeping up with its fast tempo. “The African Sanctus” took a little bit more time and work with Concert Choir.

“I’m not going to lie, some of these songs are difficult to learn and perform, but my students have been doing an excellent job preparing for this concert and putting in 100 percent of their effort each day,” Grover said.

“We’ve been working hard to prepare and perfect our songs for this concert,” County Honor Choir and Madrigal student Calei Akers said.

Originally, the entire Music Department were to have the show the same day at the Grand Theatre, but there was some conflict with how the set up was going to be, so they had to split it up into two days of performances.

“Even though we won’t be performing with the band, we’re thankful that the Grand Theatre has been so flexible and helpful and allowing us to perform at their place,” Grover said.

Grover hopes the theatre will be packed for this show.
