Q+A: Assistant Principal Lynn Dell Hawkins

Keeping the school in check is important to Tracy High Assistant Principal Lynn Dell Hawkins. Every day he is out at both lunch periods keeping watch over students. He also sorts out drama and student problems. All of his actions are for the greater good of the school. Hawkins did not always know that he was going to be an assistant principal. At first, he wanted to be an athlete. Later, he became a security guard for the school, then a teacher, and from there he worked his way up to being an assistant principal.

 

What high school did you go to? “I went to Tracy High, and I graduated in 1977.”

 

What was your favorite high school memory? “Graduation was my favorite high school memory, probably because it was something that I worked hard to achieve.

 

What did you want to be after high school? “I wanted to be an athlete. I was specifically interested in football and track.”

 

What position did you play in football? “I was the running back for Tracy High.”

 

Where did you go to college? “I went to the University of Colorado, but only for two years. I already had two years of junior college.”

 

Do you have any advice for the students? “The advice I would give would be to continue your education while you are still young.”

 

What gives you the most satisfaction with your job? “Watching the students walk across the stage on graduation day gives me the most satisfaction.”

 

Did you always want to work with education? “I had no idea that I was going to work with education. I went to school to be a psychologist. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree.”

 

How did you start working at Tracy High? “At first I was a security guard for five years. I ended up getting my bachelor’s degree during this period of time. The school wanted me to teach, so I taught for five years, and now I am here.”

 

What is your hobby? “Fishing. I love to fish. I do not really care what I am fishing for, it is the thrill of the sport that really gets to me. For example, I would cast my line in a puddle just for fun.”

 

What is your favorite movie? “My favorite movie will have to be “The Blind Side”. It has such a powerful and touching story. It really gets to me because I can relate to it. In my household we have taken kids in who did not have a place to stay.”

 

What is your favorite food? “Anyone around the office will say that my favorite food is hot wings, and it is. However my favorite dish is salmon over rice.”

 

What is most meaningful to you? “My family means the entire world to me.”
