Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by officers after a traffic stop on Sept. 8 escalated quickly.
Elias Amani, a former cadet with Tracy Police Department for two years expressed the actions used by the officers in the body cam video were the wrong moves and they could have apprehended Hill in a better judgement.
“I believe that the actions from the lead officer who apprehended Mr. Hill were wrong and there was a better way to gain compliance from Hill,” Amani said. “Although having dark window tint rolled up in a traffic stop is a huge officer safety issue, as you don’t know if the subject is reaching around for a weapon that can be used against the officer. Officers could have better explained why they need the window down rather than just using the force on Hill.”
The officer shown in the video using force towards Hill was officer Danny Torres with the Miami Police Department.
Officer Torres was placed on administrative duty until further investigation on the traffic stop that occurred on Sept. 8.
Jacobus Brakkee, a senior at Tracy High school, expressed that the officer in the video and Hill were both in the wrong during the stop.
“I believe the officer should be able to stay with the Miami Police Department because in the video shown, Hill and Officer Torres were both in the wrong,” Brakkee said.
The incident occurred with Hill three hours before the Dolphins week one opener against the Jaguars. Dolphins fans worried that star receiver Hill would not play.
Dylan Hazelbaker, a senior at Tracy High School and a Dolphins fan, expressed that the force used by the officers in the beginning of the stop was the correct move, but towards the end the actions were cruel towards Hill.
“I believe the excessive force used to get Hill out of the vehicle was fine because he would not roll down his window, although after the fact the excessive force used towards him to take him to the ground was not the correct move,” Hazelbaker said.
This incident with Hill and Miami Police Department is still being further investigated.
Later on that day, star wide receiver Tyreek Hill had seven receptions with 130 yards and a receiving touchdown.
