After an amazing 15-year career, 35-year-old Alex Morgan has decided to retire from professional soccer.
Morgan was among the most outstanding winners in the U.S. Women’s National Team, one of the greatest goal scorers, and one of the best-known female soccer stars in history.
Morgan significantly impacted the game, scoring six Olympic goals, being selected for six FIFA FIFPro Women’s World XIs, and winning five SheBelieves Cups.
Alexa Munoz, a senior varsity soccer player at Tracy High School, expressed how inspirational Morgan was to the game.
”Alex Morgan’s success has inspired little girls to start playing soccer and to watch Women’s soccer games,” Munoz said.
Munoz cherished her many memories of watching Morgan display her fantastic soccer skills.
Morgan dominated for Team USA and had an impressive resume.
Morgan scored 123 international goals and 175 total points. Morgan helped the USA National team win two World Cups (2015 and 2019) and, in 2012, won an Olympic gold medal.
Joseph Jaballas, a senior at Tracy High, expressed how great of a winner Morgan was and how impactful she was to Team USA.
“Alex Morgan was very dominant with Team USA, and it showed with all of her accomplishments with Team USA, but they lost an important piece to the team,” Jaballas said.
Jaballas enjoyed watching Morgan play for Team USA and will miss seeing her display her fantastic technique and skill.
Morgan’s decision to retire was mainly due to her family. She announced on social media that she was pregnant with her second child.
“Having children takes a heavy toll on women’s bodies, and being a mom is a full-time duty,” Lorena Gonzalez, a mom of two children, said. “Having your daily activities decrease is common when you are pregnant, and your body needs lots of healing before you can start being yourself again.”
Morgan felt she needed to be there with her new child and family. Accordingly, her body couldn’t keep up with the game. Morgan said her decision was for her mind, heart, and body.
Alex Morgan may be stepping off the pitch, but her legacy will continue to inspire generations and prove that champions aren’t defined by goals but by the impact they leave behind.
