Class of 2025 seniors break the three year loosing streak and secure a win against the juniors.
After three-year winning streak by the juniors, the senior girls came out ready to play. On Monday, Sept. 30, Tracy High’s Homecoming week kicked off with the Powder Puff game. The senior girls defeated the junior class with a final score of 24-0.
The Powder Puff game is an annual event that takes place every homecoming week for Tracy High. It involves the junior and senior girls to play flag football and are coached by members of the boys football team.
The boys become the cheer team and perform a halftime show for the audience.
The pressure on the seniors to break that streak really gave the girls motivation to show out and play hard.
Reanna Zuniga, senior quarterback for the Powder Puff game, was ready to get a win.
“It was really exciting that we finally broke the curse of losing three years in a row,” Zuniga said. “We won because we played as a team and the coaches came up with really good plays.”
Both juniors and seniors worked hard with their coaches with only having three practices total.
Senior Dylan Hazelbaker was in charge of coaching the senior class and influenced the win. He has played football at Tracy all four years and was in charge of the girls offensive line.
“It just took the girls to have confidence in themselves and when they followed what we told them, it was a winning recipe,” Hazelbaker explained. “The whole game our girls performed and that’s all it took.”
Kyrrahlynn Dowell scored the first touchdown of the game in the last eight minutes of the first half. Kassidy Myers and Bayli Brown scored next. The juniors were not able to score at all.
“We all had really good teamwork and we all hyped each other up every play and I think that helped us get the shutout,” Brown said.
Brown scored a touchdown late in the game with a pick six. She scored 12 of the 24 points herself.
Izabella Gutierrez, running back and wide receiver for the junior team, commented on what she thought contributed to their loss.
“We could have had more plays that involved the whole team and better communication with each other,” Gutierrez said.
Along with the seniors, the juniors had immense pressure to defend their three-win title.
“Yes, there was a little bit of pressure to keep the streak alive, but towards the end it was more about having fun,” Gutierrez explained.
In the final outcome, the senior girls had one goal in mind and that was to win. They fulfilled the goal. The senior girls were ecstatic to secure the victory for their last Homecoming Powder Puff game.
“It was such a fun experience for everyone and I hope the upcoming seniors defend our legacy that we leave behind to them,” Zuniga concluded.
