The Agricultural Science Academy Program (Ag/Sci Program) is designed as an alternative option for students with strong interests in agriculture and/or science. It allows students to explore career options and helps them meet their goals to prepare for higher education after high school.
A major milestone for all seniors in the program is the completion of a research-based project aimed at creating an impact on the community. For Grace Witbeck, this opportunity turned into an initiative to support local veterans in need.
Witbeck’s project revolves around organizing a donation drive for veterans, focusing on collecting essential items such as clothing, hygiene products and non-perishable food. These donations were organized for the Livermore Division – VA Palo Alto Health Care System.
“Veterans have sacrificed so much for our country and it feels important to give back to those who might be struggling,” Witbeck said.
The project took shape after Witbeck conducted research on the challenges veterans often face post-service. Many struggle with reintegration into civilian life and the lack of access to necessities adds another layer of difficulty.
Former Ag/Sci Academy Director Michael Woodward expressed his admiration for her project.
“Grace was always a great student,” Woodward said. “It’s a great project for this area and I hope that she got a good experience from doing this.”
This project can become an influential act that many can follow. Freshman Isaac Cortez looks up to the work Witbeck has done.
“I like hearing that we as a community can help those that have protected our country,” Cortez shared. “She’s showing us that even as students, we can still support them.”
Working within the framework of the Ag/Sci Academy, Witbeck approached local businesses for donations, reached out to community organizations and spread the word through announcements at school.
With her donation drive successfully completed, Witbeck can now begin to prepare to present her project in Jan. The initiative brought the community together in a shared effort to support veterans and Witbeck’s leadership has set an example for future students in the program.
As she prepares to showcase her work, her project stands as a testament to the impact that student-led efforts can have, while reflecting the values of the Ag/Sci Academy—service, leadership and compassion.
