Tracy High School English teacher Debra Corona has taught at Tracy High for nine years. Students describe Corona as cheerful, helpful and understanding. Corona’s energy drives students to get through the day and makes students look forward to having her class each day.
Some students had the opportunity to take her Advanced English class as Freshmen and came back their Senior year to take Expository Reading and Writing English. Having Corona for two years has helped students expand their vocabulary, expanded their writing techniques and helped students understand difficult reading material.
Senior Emily Houge who was once a freshman in Corona’s class spoke on her behalf.
“I had Mrs. Corona my freshman year and I have her this year, senior year, for Expository English,” Houge said. “I think she’s a great teacher because she challenges us but still is understanding to help meet our needs.”
Corona claims that the reason she is patient with students is that both of her sons had other hobbies outside of school and she understands her student-athletes if they are behind in her class.
“I think because I started teaching later and my kids had gone through school, I think I am a little more understanding of kids and their responsibilities outside of school, but I think I am pretty like most English teachers,” Corona explained.
Freshmen describe Corona as welcoming, considerate and a good explainer. The students enjoy her class because of how safe they feel in her learning environment.
Vannessa Aguirre, a senior at Tracy High.
“Freshman year I had Mrs.Corona and coming back from Covid she made it easy to get comfortable being back in school and she was always positive and helpful,” Aguirre said.
Corona’s English classes are challenging but with such a great teacher, it is easier to be successful. Corona’s students feel very productive in her class because she goes deep into the meaning of the book. Corona is also an uplifting person and cares about every single one of her students.
“I only had Mrs. Corona in zero period but even in the morning she is always in a good mood,” senior Raudy Crozier said. “She is nice, funny and very helpful. I can also tell she cares about her students.”
Students also think she is a big help in zero period due to her making sure everyone is doing their work. Corona is also happy for students when they complete their Edgenuity course.
Showing Corona truly wants the best for her students and wants them to meet the requirements to graduate.
