Juan Soto, the superstar left fielder that was the biggest name in this year’s free agency, took the sports world by storm after signing with the New York Mets for a 15-year, $765 million contract, making him the highest paid athlete of all time.
Soto became one of the most sought-after players in the league after being traded to the Yankees in 2024 and dominating opposing pitchers alongside Aaron Judge on their way to a World Series run.
Jake Tyler, a senior here at Tracy High School, expressed how much of an impact Juan Soto will have on the Mets following their heartbreaking end to the 2024 season in the National League Championship Series.
“He will bring a new charge to the offense,” said Tyler. “Soto will hopefully lead the Mets to a World Series in the future.”
Soto accomplished many things early in his MLB career including five Silver Slugger awards and leading the Nationals to World Series title in 2019.
Soto also has four All-Star Game selections and became the youngest player to win the National League Batting Title in 2020.
Noah Behrmann, a senior at Tracy High School and fan of the Yankees, expressed how Soto leaving the Yankees will impact their chances on a playoff run or a World Series title in the future.
“Without Soto they are missing one of their best players,” Behrmann said. “They are also going to miss out on how good of a hitter he is in situations with a lot of pressure.”
Bryce Correll, a senior at Tracy High School, expressed his opinion on whether or not Soto is worth signing such a huge deal.
“Soto will impact the Mets because he is one of the best players in the league right now and plays very well,” Correll said. “I don’t think he’s worth $765 million because no one should be worth that money for a sport that can cause career ending injuries.”
The Mets have created plenty of excitement around their fanbase about their new superstar player that they have locked down for many years to come.
