Marching band places fourth in review
October 30, 2013
The Pride of Tracy, the Tracy High marching band never disappoints when it comes to the Band Reviews. With Band Director Jeffrey Kumagai guiding the band with his musical skill the band is sure to move forward.
The purpose of competing in reviews is to give the band the opportunity to see where they rank with other schools.
“The review turned out to be unforgettable,” Christopher Mayong, a freshman, said.
The band placed second in its division in Cupertino Band review on Oct. 19. Katherine McCarthy, senior, placed fourth in Drum Military, missing third by a single point.
“It was my worst performance it was very upsetting and disappointing to lose by one point,” McCarthy said.
“There are many things that we could still improve on. Our marching and techniques could always be better,” Kumagai said. “The band is always having opportunities to improve on its skills, and it never fails to work hard toward those improvements.”
“There are many things that can be fixed, even if we were to place first, there are always skills that can be improved,” Kumagai said.
Band members had similar thoughts to Kumagai.
“We did better than at the last review, but we could always be a lot better in our performances,” freshman Justin Fields said.
Kumagai thinks highly of the band and believes that it can get better and improve as they continue to do more reviews.
“The band has grown since Band Camp. They have gotten a lot better from the first week of Band Camp,” Kumagai said.
The next band review will be held in Pleasanton on Oct. 26. Tracy High along with other schools will be competing in 10 divisions.
“This review will be a lot tougher because all schools will be competing in the divisions, it will be very interesting to see how other schools are working hard to place,” Kumagai said.
Kumagai is confident that with the band working harder each day and improving each practice they really have a shot at bringing home a first place trophy.
“I am pleased with how the band is doing, but we need to work on a lot more for the final review,” Kumagai said.
Color guard and shields placed eighth out of 12
“They started out really well, but most of our color guard are rookies,” Kumagai said.
According to Kumagai, since Band Camp color guard and the shields have become a lot stronger. There are still improvements that need to be made before they will be ready for the final review.
“We did better than at the last review, but we could always be a lot better in our performances,” freshman Justin Fields said.
