Q + A: Math teacher Doug Piuser

Doug Piuser is a math teacher at Tracy High and has been teaching for seven years. He enjoys skiing and his favorite baseball team is the Los Angeles Dodgers. He doesn’t plan on retiring anytime soon but when he does he wants to travel the world with his wife.
When and where did you graduate high school? “Thousand Oaks High School in 1971”
How long have you been teaching? “I’ve been teaching for seven years at Tracy High.”
Did you always want to be a math teacher? “No, I originally painted cars. I didn’t realize I wanted to teach until I started coaching.”
Why are you a math teacher? “I like math and kids.”
Why do you like math? “Anything I’m good at I like, and I’m good at math.”
What is your subject in math? “Geometry is my favorite. It was a challenge for me since I hadn’t done it since high school. I had to relearn it all over again.”
Do you like teaching high school kids? “They’re almost people, and little kids are too little. They’re pretty close to grown-ups.”
What’s your favorite memory? “The end of the year concert last year, when all the school choirs and orchestras came together to perform. I saw a lot of talented kids who I didn’t know had talent.”
What’s your favorite hobby? “Skiing because it is a physically challenging sport.”
What’s your favorite baseball team? Why? “Dodgers, I grew up in Southern California and that was the team. When I was a kid they won all the time.”
When do you plan to retire? “In about five years or more.”
What will you do after retirement? “Travel to France or anywhere in Europe, every state in the Union, even Alaska, and every continent.
