Q + A: Physical Education teacher Matt Shrout

Matt Shrout has been teaching physical education at Tracy High for 10 years and has been head coach for the varsity football team for four years.  Shrout loves to be outdoors and raise his two children, his son, Jake who is 10 and his daughter, Riley who is 9.

 

Where did you graduate from high school? “San Lorenzo High School in 1993.”

What college did you go to? “Washington State and finished in Hayward.

How long have you been teaching physical education? “I have been teaching for six years at Logan High School in Union City and ten at Tracy.”

What do you coach at Tracy? “Varsity football”

How long have you been coaching? “I have been the head coach for four years at Tracy.”

How did you get involved in coaching? “I played a lot of sports in high school; football, basketball, and baseball. It seemed like the most practical thing to do.”

What other coaching experience do you have? “I coached football and baseball at James Logan High School for seven years.”

What’s the best thing about coaching football? “Watching them improve and really come together as a team throughout the season.”

What do you enjoy most about being a dad? “Watching them learn new things and how excited they get when they do.”

What are your hobbies outside of school? “Hunt or fish, I love the outdoors. It’s a perfect escape from the city.”

If you weren’t teaching what would you do? “Something that has to do with the outdoors. Maybe fish or become fishing or hunting guide.”

If you could go anywhere, where would you go? “Montana, everything you can do is pretty much in your backyard. It’s a beautiful place.”
