‘The Fault in Our Stars’ takes readers on emotional ride
March 7, 2014
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is a must read for teenagers eager to go on a roller coaster ride of emotions, it had me laughing and crying all the way through. This novel, published in January 2012, is a tragic love story based around two young cancer patients.
The main character, Hazel Grace Lancaster was diagnosed with stage four Thyroid cancer when she was 13. Through a support group and friend Isaac, she meets Augustus Waters, former basketball player and amputee. He is currently in remission for Osteosarcoma, or bone cancer. Throughout the novel the two fall deeper and deeper in love with each other because of all the amazing adventures they share together, but although she feels herself falling, Hazel constantly pulls away from Augustus.
Their love is tragically cut short when the cancer in Augustus returns and he becomes worse day by day. When Hazel finally accepts that her love is gone, she begins to find letters from Augustus that explain to her how she gave him forever, within a number of days.
Due to the shortened time they have together, instead of saying “I love you” to each other, they use the word “okay.” This is my favorite part in the novel because it’s a word that is so simple, yet can mean so much more to them.
My least favorite part is when they use Augustus’s wish to travel to Amsterdam to meet the author of Hazel’s favorite book, “An Imperial Affliction.” The author, Peter Van Houten, turns out to be an ignorant drunk who wants nothing to do with the couple, let alone his fans. This experience crushes Hazel’s hopes of ever figuring out the ending of the novel and fuels a hatred for Mr. Houten.
I highly recommend this book to young adults, and hope the movie portrays the emotions that Green exposes throughout the book.
Fox Studios started filming the movie adaptation in 2012, produced by Josh Boone, it will be released on June 6. It will star Shailene Woodley as Hazel, Ansel Elgort as Augustus Waters, Nat Wolff as Isaac, and Laura Dern as Mrs. Lancaster.
Green is well known for his other young adult novels, such as Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns.
