Q + A: Science teacher Ken Wedel

Ken Wedel loves teaching science because he learns something new every day. He enjoys taking trips to the mountains and hopes to drive a car in a destruction derby one day.
What are your hobbies? “I enjoy rock hunting. I enjoy wood working and making stuff at home. Also, I shoot black powder rifles and enjoy playing computer games, my favorite is Skyrim.”
What is one piece of advice that you would give to high school students? “I would say to remember your goals every day because it’s your everyday choices that get you to your goal.”
What is your favorite type of food? “I love Mongolian barbeque. My favorite type of food is anything that my wife makes, some of my favorites are lasagna, pork chops, and ravioli.”
What do you love most about your job? “The best moment is when a student really gets something. Also, I love teaching science because I learn something new every day.”
What is the most difficult part about your job? “The most difficult is when a student does not care to learn, I have a desire to want them to learn. It makes me want to find ways to present information, so that it is interesting for everyone.”
If you would change something about education, what would it be? “I think it would be better with smaller schools that had different ways of teaching, not all students learn the same way. This way, I think students would have a better education because it would be more tailored to their learning style.”
What motivates you? “What motivates me to do a good job is that students that are extremely well educated tend to have better lives. I believe that people make their own fate, and you have to work hard to attain your own goals.”
What is your favorite place to go on a day trip? “I like to go up to the mountains. I like going to the Sierra Nevada Mountains and to Yosemite. I enjoy hiking, camping, and observing the natural environment.”
What are some items on your bucket list? “I want to drive a car in a destruction derby, travel to as many other countries as I can, and I want to go skydiving.”
Who is your favorite superhero? “I would have to say Superman because his powers are natural, he did not acquire them, it is just who he is.”
