Benjie Lagasca teaches College Prep English to sophomores at Tracy High. He loves teaching his students almost as much as he enjoys interior designing and teaching English.

Where were you born? “I was born in Manila, Philippines, and lived there until I was 23.”

What high school did you go to and when did you graduate? “I went to RooseveltHigh School in Manila and graduated in 1970.”

Do you have another job? “Yes, I am a Christian pastor at the Lion of Judah Foursquare Church, 10 years as youth pastor and 19 years as a senior pastor”

Are you in charge of any clubs at the school? “I have been in charge of the Asian Pacific Islander Club for 13-14 years now. The club teaches the students about Asian culture, and promoting diverse friendships between all ethnic groups.”

What role does religion play in your life? “The role of religion is vital. It helps me make all of my major and minor decisions in my life.”

Why did you decide to become an English teacher? “It’s always been my favorite subject from elementary school through college. I believe English is a universal language, it’ll take you places.”

Do you like teaching high school students? “I love it, it’s easier to communicate, I can share my thoughts, philosophy, and feelings. I enjoy teaching them because they are the hope of the future.”

What do you like most about English? “I like to teach grammar, Romeo and Juliet, and The Great Gatsby.”

What do you like to do on your free time? “I like going to the gym, reading, and interior design or house decorating.”

What’s interior design? “House decorating, it’s a gift. I usually for myself, friends, and family members, sometimes people pay me, but usually not.”
