“Divergent” disappoints as movie adaptation
March 27, 2014
“Divergent” is a action-adventure film set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is a Divergent and will never fit into any one group.
When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader (Kate Winslet) to destroy all Divergents, Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious Four (Theo James) and together they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late. The “Divergent” made $85 million at the box office in the first week it was released on March 21.
Woodley has a fantastic performance in her starring role. Her performance was believable and outstanding. She really developed her character, Tris Prior, and her acting skills were impressive for her age.
Winslet, known for her dramatic performance in “Titanic”, makes an appearance in the film. This was a surprising role for her, because her background has been in the dramatic genre for many years. I felt that she had trouble getting into her character and should probably stick to dramatic roles.
James’s performance was above average, but not as good as other actors. His character was boring and much exaggerated. He could work a little more on his acting skills.
The movie in general was not entertaining and had very little action in it. The little action that was in the movie was not very long or thrilling. There wasn’t any excitement at all. Not once did I feel that anyone’s life was in danger. Also the romantic chemistry between Tris and Four was off. There was not even a spark between them which made their “romantic” scenes together boring and unrealistic.
Although there were these problems with the movie, the graphics and scenery were well done. The animation was convincing which made the background footage look very high quality.
I highly recommend that you skip seeing this movie. It isn’t worth your time or money.
