Clarke and Fisher hope to lead Softball team to league championship
March 27, 2014
Tracy High’s varsity softball team is off to a great start at 9-2.In the first two games they beat cross-town rivals West High,14-3, and Kimball High,7-2.
“Winning our first two games felt good,” Varsity Coach Greg Smith said.
Captains senior Ellie Fisher was ecstatic about the win.
“My favorite game so far this year was the West High game,” Fisher said. “We killed them.”
Senior Jazmin Clarke, a captain, was excited about the wins as well.
“Beating West was more exciting because it is the original cross-town rivalry,” Clarke said. “However, when we started beating them really bad the game just got boring. Kimball’s game was more back and forth, so it was a more exciting game.”
Tracy high has lost two games so far, against Sierra, 2-1, and East Union, 10-2, but the team is still keeping up its spirits.
“Our losses to Sierra and East Union showed us that we have work to do, “Smith said. “We have to be more competitive in our league.”
Fisher is proud of the team despite the losses.
“I think we just need to act more like a team and get to know each other more,” Fisher said.
Clarke is also proud of the team.
“We did lose two games, “Clarke said, “Those are probably two of the toughest teams we’ll play this year, and we did pretty decent.”
Both Clarke and Fisher have been offered scholarships to colleges through softball and have already signed on to the schools where they wish to go. Clark plans on going to Utah State once she graduates.
“It feels really exciting, it’s a great accomplishment,” Clarke said. “I have been playing softball for 10 years and had to miss out on a lot of things because of it so it finally feels like it’s paying off.”
Fisher has signed to play at Santa Clara University next year. She looks forward to the new opportunities that the school has to offer her.
“I’m excited to get the opportunity to play with new people,” Fisher said. “I’m also looking forward to the education there.”
Smith hopes the team goes far this season, especially since it’s the teams last year in their current league. Next year, the team will be placed into a different league
“My hopes this year are to win league championship,” Smith said. “Then hopefully playoffs.”
Smith is also excited about the change of leagues.
“The new league will include West, Lincoln, Lodi, St. Mary’s and Tokay,” Smith said. “The competition will be really good in the new league.”
Tracy will host Chavez High on March 27, at 4 p.m.
