This is my high school career: Hunter Lew
May 6, 2014
My high school career has been slightly different than most people. Freshman year I started out at West High. The middle school that I went to was in the attendance area for Kimball High, so that is where all of my friends that I grew up with went. Luckily, I decided to do cheer my freshman year, so I was able to meet some new people before the school year started. It was very strange going to a brand new school where I didn’t know anyone. My older sister was a junior at West, so she was able to show me around and introduce me to some people. This was the year that I met my favorite teacher Mrs. McMillan who I had for three years. She was my Spanish teacher. She and I became close throughout the three years that I had her. Overall, I had a great experience my freshman year, as I got to know more people I felt more comfortable at the school.
When sophomore year began, I was nervous, but very excited. I wasn’t sure who would be in my classes. I didn’t do cheerleading this year so my experience was a bit different. I would still go to almost all of the football games, basketball games, and school functions, but this time with all of my friends, instead of performing. This year I struggled in school. I got very caught up in friends, and I didn’t pay as much attention to my studies. After getting my final grade in math, I found out that I didn’t do well enough to move on, and that I would have to repeat that class my junior year.
When my junior year began I was very excited because I was finally an “upper classman”. This was the first year I was able to go off campus for lunch. I was able to make grades and was able to do cheerleading again. I was finally able to play powder puff. I went to all of the practices, and I was going to be the starting running back. The practice right before our game, I sprained my ankle, and I was no longer able to play. I was disappointed that I couldn’t play anymore, but I still went out and supported the juniors. Spraining my ankle complicated my junior year more than I planned. I had classes at IGCG, which is a separate campus from West High, and I had to walk pretty far to get there. Since I sprained my ankle, I had to get all new classes because I couldn’t walk to IGCG anymore. My junior year my scheduled changed three different times. This is very difficult when you are used to your teachers and classmates and then your schedule changes. Even with all of the changes I still managed to do well in school and get the grades I needed in order to get my credits.
My senior year was the biggest change of all for me. This was the year that I had to switch schools and go to Tracy High. There were a lot of complications with this process. I wasn’t aware that I was able to stay at West High because it was my senior year. When I first found out that I had to switch schools, I was upset, but then I later got used to the fact that I couldn’t change the situation. I knew a couple people from Tracy High which made the switch a little easier. They introduced me to other people, and eventually I got to know many more people. I ended up with decent classes and I adjusted very well. I think overall the switch was the best decision for me. I made a lot of new friends and some that I will continue to be close with even after high school. If I hadn’t switched schools, I would not have had the chance to meet some of the amazing people that I did. Even though I haven’t gone to Tracy High for my whole high school career, it seems as if I did. The change wasn’t easy, but I was able to get through it. I will be graduating with Tracy High’s 2014 class on May 31. In the fall, I will be attending Diablo Valley College (DVC) for general education and then transferring to a four-year college. I am undecided in what I want to major in, so right now, the community college is the best choice for me.
