Volleyball squad looking for another title season
September 2, 2015
The Tracy High volleyball team was the 2014 TCAL co-champions, and they are only getting stronger. With strong, coachable players who have years of experience playing in both club and high school teams, the team is destined to succeed as they prepare for the upcoming season.
“Our team was strong last year, and I believe we have a strong team again this year,” Coach Mahina McCamey said. “They are all amazing young ladies who get along well with each other.”
McCamey said that the team consists of players that are willing to learn, have great attitudes, and a solid volleyball foundation.
Like all sports teams, the varsity volleyball team has its weaknesses.
“The one aspect I think the team could improve on is energy-getting fired up on the court in both practice and games,” McCamey said. “I would love to see one or two of them to really step it up even further in terms of being a leader on team.”
McCamey said that the team is working to improve its consistency and minimizing errors.
“Our goal, as it is every year, is to go after the TCAL championship and play well, strong, and together so we are successful in playoffs,” McCamey said. “Although we lost six seniors last year, and we are in a very competitive league, I expect that our team will get stronger every week so that we are ready for the tough competition ahead of us.”
The loss of six players to graduation brought the addition of three underclassmen to the varsity team: Samantha Brown, Lindsay Price, and Karina Rodriguez.
“Sam is extremely coachable and has the desire to learn and improve every aspect of her game,” McCamey said of the sophomore. “Karina is a natural born athlete and leader. Lindsay is a hard worker, and she has the determination to be better at everything she does. She always brings positivity to the court.”
Senior Grace Murphy plays outside hitter and has been on varsity for four years.
“From my team this season, I expect a lot of growth to happen considering this is a new team and we’re all getting used to playing with each other,” Murphy said. “This is definitely the most fun and close knit group I’ve been a part of.”
McCamey seems to notice the chemistry the team shares as well.
“They all seem to get along very well,” McCamey said.
Both the coach and the players believe this season will be successful. The team defeated both Kimball on Aug. 28, at Kimball High School and Beyer on Sept. 1, at Tracy High School. The next home game is against Oakdale on Sept. 10, at 6 p.m.
