Team managers making an impact for varsity basketball
December 17, 2015
Having a team manager for a sports team at Tracy High has been common. Their job can have endless responsibilities: keeping scores, carrying equipment, keeping stats and, of course, carrying water.
“I have the opportunity of documenting footage for the girls’ basketball games,” senior Hannah Hylton said.
Hylton’s job is taking video of each girls’ basketball game, so the team could have video to look at for practice,to see the mistakes they made and improve on them. Hylton occasionally will keep score for the team, too.
“I started recording games around two years ago. I have found that having film helps the girls learn from their mistakes and make the corrections. Hannah is a statistician. She simply records the games for me. She has also helped with the scorebook,” girls varsity coach Derek Solano said.
“I do not attend practices, but I do attend every game. It is a pretty cool job because I get to see how the team is run, and I always get free snacks,” Hylton said.
“It is difficult to find students willing to donate their time. Hannah is doing and excellent job for us,” Solano said.
Not only is Hylton helping out with the girls’ basketball team. The boys’ have helpers also.
“My job is to keep stats, I keep the players in an athletic mindset and help around at practice when needed,” junior Daniel Villareal said.
Villareal is the varsity boys’ basketball team manager, along with Alex Smith. They are not only a physical asset to the coach, but a mental asset to the team.
“My job is not really stressful, but is frustrating when players do not run the offense or the defense correctly to the standards we hold them at,” Villareal said.
Team managing could be a big task to put on students considering they have to balance that and their school work.
