‘Zoolander 2’ fails to impress

“Zoolander 2“ offers an audience giddy humor through religious themes and sexuality. The silly humor fans of the first movie enjoyed is still there, but is outdated and overplayed.

Just like the original Zoolander from 2001, the movie was directed and co-written by Ben Stiller who plays Derek Zoolander and Owen Wilson also returns as Hansel.

It has been 15 years since the two models have been in their prime and both men are no longer relevant in the fashion world. Derek has been in hiding while mourning the death of his wife Matilda and the loss of his son Derek Jr., to child protection services. Hansel has been wearing a mask to hide his hideous scar but has continued with some of his previous behavior.

The two are reunited by a fashion police Interpol agent Velentina Valencia (Penelope Cruz) who is investigating the murder of many models around the world, the latest being Justin Bieber (as himself). All of the murders are tied to Zoolander because they all died with one of his signature facial expressions.

This leads the trio to Rome where world famous fashion designer Alexayna Atoz (Kirsten Wiig) is planning an evil runway show. She has been working with Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell) and has been in the world’s top fashion prison since the events of the first movie.

This is where things get weird. The evil fashion designers are in hunt for the fountain of youth, which exist because of a fake story about the creation of our species. In the fake story there was a third person in the Garden of Eden: Steve the first model. He has the power of youth. It is said that whoever drinks the blood of a descendent of Steve will gain his powers.

The movie ends with a mock sacrifice with many cameos by top fashion designers such as Tommy Hilfiger and Marc Jacobs. The ending leaves audiences realizing the repetitive stupidity and sexual humor was funnier 15 years ago than it is today. Near the end Mugatu actually acknowledges how dumb the plot was, but instead of laughing I just sat there agreeing. Derek’s and Hansel’s beautiful stupidity has its moments, but doesn’t make up for how ridiculous the jokes really are.

This movie is another cash grab movie made by actors past their prime. The movie fails to introduce new humor and has a storyline that barely kept me interested. The special effects were well done and the silliness of the fake world of fashion is kept in check. I would recommend this movie if you enjoyed the first movie but if you haven’t it might be a little silly.
