Kings say goodbye to Arco Arena
April 15, 2016
The Sacramento Kings, an NBA team, has been playing in Arco Arena (among other names) for 28 years and are now moving to downtown Sacramento to the newly built arena, the Golden 1 Center. I believe that Arco Arena is one of the greatest arenas that any NBA team has ever played in, but moving to the new arena will also be a good change for the Kings.
The name of Arco Arena has been changed multiple times from Arco to Power Balance Pavilion and currently Sleep Train Arena. The arena is most famous for being called Arco before being changed to Power Balance Pavilion in 2011.
The first game ever played in Arco Arena was against the Seattle Supersonics, which are now the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Supersonics won, 97-75, on Nov. 8, 1988, at the 17,317 seat venue.
This arena was home to the Kings for 28 years, where there were so many memorable moments like in 2002 playoffs where the Kings’ Mike Bibby hit a game-winning basket with eight seconds left. It was probably the best moment because it was a playoff game against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.
It meant a lot to people because it was one of the very few arenas that has stayed for a long time and even coaches played in the arena. I have my own memories, where I was at the game against the Utah Jazz when the Kings retired former player Chris Webber’s number four jersey. In this arena the Kings fans set the record for loudest crowd in the NBA on Nov. 15, which is in the Guinness World Records. The fans are a big part of what makes the arena really special because it’s so hard to play there and visiting teams know they are entering a raucous place.
The first game ever playoff game played in Arco Arena on April 30, 1996, where the Kings played the Seattle Supersonics. Another great moment was the last ever playoff game in Arco Arena when number 23 Kevin Martin hit a game-winning layup against the San Antonio Spurs in 2006.
The facility was Arco Arena was from 1988-2011, Power Balance Pavilion 2011-12, and finally Sleep Train Arena.
More than just basketball games were held there, as over 200 events a year there like concerts, wrestling matches, and even high school basketball championship games.
Arco Arena will be missed by the people who were raised going with their parents going to every home game.
This arena will never be forgotten in my eyes. The last game I ever went to was against the Toronto Raptors on Nov. 15, where the Kings won, so I will never forget that.
The last game ever played in the facility was against the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 9, where the Kings won, 114-112. Many past players and coaches were there. It was a memorable day when the Kings surprised the fans with a banner that read Arco and Sleep Train Arena 1988-2016.
The Golden 1 Center will be opening in about 170 days. Although this is a goodbye to Arco Arena, a new door opens to the Golden 1 Center where many Kings fans look forward to making new memories.
