Tracy High’s softball team is on the verge of making playoffs with just a couple of games left in the regular season. With a 9-2 league record and first in league, Tracy’s last two weeks of play will be against West and Tokay.

“League play is going pretty well so far. I think our biggest accomplishment has been beating St. Mary’s 2 out of 3 games,” Hannah Hylton said.

Hylton, a senior, has been playing all four years for Tracy High softball and is looking to end her career with a league title. Hylton is 5-0 with a 0.88 earned run average (ERA). She leads the league in ERA and tied for third in league with Mikayla Coelho in wins.

Hylton expects big things, “I expect us to finish in first place. We deserve it this year.”

Head coach Paulette Keeney is impressed with her team in her first year as the varsity head coach.

“Right now, I want to win league and in order for that to happen we need to win the next four games of league,” Keeney said.

For the third consecutive year, there is a freshman on the varsity team. In 2014, it was Coelho, 2015 was Rachel Cid, and this year it’s Karina Faasisila.

Faasisila has been a big contributor to the team with her pitching and field play at first base. Pitching, Faasisila is 4-2 with a 2.93 ERA and also leads the teams in strikeouts with 27.

“I feel proud of myself for making the team as a freshman,” Faasisila said.

Keeney has high hopes in the future with Faasisila.

“My new freshmen pitcher has shown a lot of potential and worked really hard, so I can’t wait for the future with her,” Keeney said.

One of the hottest hitters on the team right now is Cid who is hitting .444 with 21 runs scored, 21 RBI (runs batted in), and three homeruns.

“Cid has been really awesome with the bat,” Keeney said.

“In my second year on varsity, I feel like have grown as a player by being more outgoing and stepping up as a leader,” Cid said.

Throughout the season, Cid has had some ups and downs.

“I feel like I had a better year last year as a freshman. I had to prove myself to make varsity, so it raised my level of play,” Cid said.

With the end of year approaching, Tracy will hope to keep the momentum going into the last weeks of league and hope to continue it into playoffs.

Tracy will be playing West at West High on April 26, at 4 p.m. and on April 28 at Tracy Sports Complex at 3:30 p.m. If Tracy were to win its last four games, playoffs would start on May 22.
