The Boys and Girls Club at Tracy High School offers a safe space on campus for students to connect, receive support and access resources. The club, which began at Tracy High last year, offers kids a place to go to after school for meals and homework help.
Located in the D Building in two rooms, the club is also open for both lunches.
“Our mission statement is to inspire and enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens,” Unit Director Lucas Furtado said.
The program is also immensely helpful for student athletes.
“We also serve meals to the football teams before the practice starts,” Furtado stated. “Every kid gets one [free] hot meal every day.”
The Boys and Girls Club Athletic Director Johnnie Oh said the club also offers physical training opportunities.
“We offer weight room sessions every single day of the week [and] workouts,” Oh said.
Oh, who has volunteered as a youth basketball and football coach, states that he has experience of being involved and benefiting the community.
“I’ve worked on nonprofits before…I’ve owned my own business for the better part of 10 years and recently sold it last year.” Oh stated.
Lead Youth Development Gigi Henriquez reflected on how much the Boy’s and Girl’s club has transformed.
“It’s expanded so much since 20 plus years ago. The major difference is the resources that Boys and Girls Club provide to the community now.” Henriquez said.
Looking ahead, Henriquez said the club hopes to add more activities
“We’re trying to get some field trips that we can take the kids on during weekends,” she said.
Overall, the Boys and Girls Club is a welcoming environment offering students mentorship, meals, and support.
