Senior Alex Warner wins match in tournament.

The Tracy High wrestling team finished the 2014 season with a record of 1-3. Senior Alex Warner (14-3) was the only wrestler that moved on to the Masters competition after the entire team placed third in League.

“My goal in the beginning of the year was to go to Masters,” Warner said. “It feels good knowing that I accomplished what I set out for.”

After achieving his main goal of the year, Warner plans to overcome bigger goals for the rest of his season.

“The main thing I am focusing on now is moving onto State,” Warner said, “There is a lot of pressure on me since I am the only one who made it this far.”

Class of 2013 graduate, Albert Landeros, was the one wrestler who qualified for the Master’s tournament last season.

“Albert subsequently also qualified for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State meet as well. I hope that Alex is able to realize the same success.” Head coach Jonathan Blackwell said.

Warner feels like he makes an impact on his fellow wrestlers.

“I feel like a role model because of the fact that a lot of the guys on our team this year are freshmen,” Warner said. “Sometimes they didn’t always know what they were doing and it was cool to get the opportunity to help them.”

Warner started his wrestling season late this year because of an ankle injury.

“He started his season late due to factors including illness and injury,” Blackwell said. “Had he started right away at the end of football, he might be further along in his final stages of development than he is.”

Although Warner came into the season late the coach still believed he would improve.

“Even with the late start to his season, he has done well having finished top
in our league tournament and finishing second at the divisional.” Blackwell said.

Warner will need to finish in the top seven of thirty-two wrestlers this coming weekend, where all divisional medalists will meet for the section Masters tournament.
