As of Nov. 5, 2025, California voters passed Proposition 50 to reshape the states’ congressional maps.
Backed by Governor Gavin Newsom, Prop. 50 is intended to make five Republican held congressional districts in California favorable to Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections.

Prop. 50 will allow the state legislature to replace California’s current congressional district maps that were drawn in by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission after the 2020 U.S. Census.
Newsom affirmed his view in a press conference right after the measure passed.
“It was not just a victory for the Democratic Party. It was a victory for the United States of America, for the people of this country, the principles that our founding fathers lived and died for,” Newson stated.
A victory for Democrats, Prop. 50 received some abrupt reaction from opposing Republicans like Charles Munger Jr.

“For what looms for the people of California, I am saddened by the passage of Proposition 50,” Munger Jr. expressed.
Republicans like Munger Jr and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger have made immense efforts to urge voters against Prop. 50. Contributing more than $32.7 million and appearing in ads intended to oppose Prop. 50.
The passing of Proposition 50 will change California’s congressional districts forever. Now, out of 52 congressional districts, Democrats represent 43 while Republicans will represent nine.
