Tracy High’s Cheer and Dance Team have a season that lasts nearly all year round. During the beginning of November, winter sports start their season while fall sports come to an end, but not for Cheer and Dance.
During fall, cheerleaders are out supporting the football team and in winter they begin cheering for basketball. This gives cheer a very long season, they have tryouts in May, then begin practicing in June and their season doesn’t come to an end till February.
Callie Foisy, a Senior and Football Cheer captain at Tracy High claims “it is definitely tiring but it is so much fun!” explaining the long season they have. She points out how cool it is that only Cheer and Dance get to experience this unique season.
Both teams point out that making the transition from football to basketball season is not a huge difference, although there is a few new things.
“We learn a lot more dances” is one thing pointed out by Sophie McCrary, a senior at Tracy High and one of the dance captains, when discussing changing to basketball season.
McCrary describes her love for dance and being a captain. “The hard work we all put in as well as everyone’s determination to become better as dancers and people.” That is what makes her love representing her team so much.
For Cheer, a big difference in the seasons is that they change captains. Kayah Moore is one of the new captains for Basketball season, she describes her love for the role, “It keeps me humble and motivated to keep my team motivated.”
Foisy describes her time being captain as an experience she is very grateful for. “It was really amazing to be able to represent the team as a football captain.” She exclaims.
Cheerleaders Moore and Foisy describe the changes of the season. “The transition is teaching/learning new cheers specifically for basketball season.” Foisy says.
“We rework certain cheers if needed to fit basketball plays and calls.” Moore adds.
Tracy High’s Cheerleaders and Dancers put in a lot of effort for the whole duration of their lengthy season despite lacking recognition of the tenacity it takes. It takes lots of dedication, teamwork, and motivation. They bring lots of energy to all the Football and Basketball games, hyping up our team and the crowd!
