On Jan. 18th at the Grand Theater, musicians and actors Tyler Hilton and Kate Voegele played their “Celebrating the Music of One Tree Hill” concert. Journalism students got the chance to interview Hilton and Voegele about their lives and careers. Hilton and Voegele are both known for their roles on the CW hit show One Tree Hill as Chris Keller and Mia Catalano and their careers as musicians.
Hilton and Voegele expressed what kept music exciting for them after performing for 15 plus years.
“Every night the audience is different and it makes the song a little bit different every night for me,” Hilton expressed. “And it really, truly is exciting to like, I play these songs, and I really have so much fun.”
Voegele agreed with Hilton’s statement and counted on the thought.
“Yeah, it’s so true,” Voegele continued. “The audience is different every night. The energy is different every night… and there’s an aspect to that novelty of traveling and just being in a new city with its own kid of culture and energy and vibe…”
Hilton and Voegele reflected on how they defined success today compared to their careers first started out. Hilton started off by saying success to him is being able to and keep on performing.
“I feel like being able to keep doing it is, like, I’m stocked cause there’s so many people I’ve known that got to do it for a while and then don’t get to do it. anymore,” Hilton expressed. “I keep thinking about, just longevity as being like the main thing of success.
Voegele agreed with Hilton and discussed what she felt was successful when she was younger.
“Yeah, I’m so with you,” Voegele stated. “Probably when I was younger, I probably had, like, very traditional sort of stereotypical ideas of success.”
To end the interview, they were asked what some advice they would give to their high school selves. Hilton said to try everything while Voegele said to prove the people who believed in you right.
“Learn as many things as you can you know” Hilton explained. “Like pick a lane and try to like learn as much about that as you can.”
“Instead of like, screw the people who don’t believe in you and think you can’t do it,” Voegele explained. “Don’t even think of them, think about the person who encouraged you.”
